PostgreSQL Connection Error and No Smart Content

If you have upgraded to Daz Studio 4.9 and are receiving an error when you launch Studio that says, "Daz Studio cannot establish a valid PostgreSQL connection", you will need to reinstall PostgreSQL.

Make sure you close Daz Studio.

Then, launch Daz Install Manager (DIM). If you need to download DIM, do that here: http://www.daz3d.com/install-manager-info

Then, go to your Installed pane.  If PostgreSQL is already installed, please uninstall.

Then, go to your Ready to Download pane, and reinstall PostgreSQL, (or if you did not have to uninstall, install it for the first time).

Then, close Install Manager.

Launch Daz Studio 4.9.

If this does not resolve the error, you should change the port that Daz Studio is assigned.  To do this, go to Edit > Preferences...> CMS Settings > Port and select a different port, and click Accept. Then, close Daz Studio, and relaunch Daz Studio.

Also check that your firewall and antivirus are set to allow Daz Studio.

If the none above troubleshooting steps help resolve the error, please open a ticket in Helpdesk, located here: https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/agent/dashboard .  Please provide the Daz Studio Log file (Help> Troubleshooting> View Log File...) in your request.

Thank you! Changing ports worked successfully...

For anyone else having similar issues, I recommend Edit>Preferences...> CMS Settings> Port and change the port Number to 1800

This is fairly generic and works on numerous online games when there is port issues - So I guessed it would work here! It does thank god!

I mainly work offline when using DAZ, but being able to connect is most useful.

I had SUCH an issue with PostgreSQL Connection. I had tried to reinstall several times with no luck. However, when changing the CMS Settings, as explained in detail by Warren Marris,it worked INSTANTLY..(I ported to 1800 as he had directed)!! Thanks again, for this great troubleshooting tip...!!

Unfortunately it did not work for me.
I don't have a firewall, I don't have an antivirus. I tried with PostgreSQL installed manually with no luck. I tried with PostgreSQL installed using Install Manager and it made no difference.

Don't know what else to do. Opened a support ticket.
    Waiting game now.

Unfortunately, uninstalling everything and reinstalling again, followed by reimporting metadata (as the support team suggested) didn't do any good either - even changing the port again to 1800.

    Can't connect with PostgreSQL still.
This is very frustrating after installing about 7 thousand items with Install Manager.

I had (or still?) i have same problem receiving errors at firewall that Postgresql cannot connect....i made an exception at firewall and seems that i dont have errors anymore and i noticing better performance.
I running studio at Mac.If the firewall settings are on and stealth i think is better...
I had same request at help center with Angela Sandberg( the best :) among one other person at help center) but my situation was a little more complicated and combined...It seems that works now.
Many thanks to Daz help center for the fast and helpful responses.

CMS was always a problem. In many verisons huge number of users had issue that Daz doesn't see its content. I already saw how people try the program for the first time, get the error on the very begining and then refuse to struggle with this madness and simply uninstal. Daz has a bad fame because of CMS and that is why authors must deal away with CMS complitely, the algoritm of content must be rewriten from zero, because CMS gave us million proofs it will never work fine.

I'm having the exact same issue. Just started recently. I reinstalled it, changed the port as suggested above, and still nothing. I shall put in a ticket and see what can be done.

Hi i am having same problem like Bruno. Ive send several tickets but not body is talking to me yet. I even call a number and the answering lady was very rude to me that she don't understand South African english. I am on a very hectic dateline and can't not get hold of any body. I have invested way touch money on Daz studio that i think i deserve some respect. Here is a video link to what i am dealing with here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVkZ6NxQWfk Ive formatted my computer 3 time and spend the past 4 days trying to resolve this but not good.

I read somewhere that if your user account has Administrator privileges, that PostgreSQL won't run. Is that possibly what's going on here?

Well, I guess maybe that's changed since PostgreSQL 8.2. Here's from their FAQs:
Why do I need a non-administrator account to run PostgreSQL under?
When a hacker gains entry to a computer using a software bug in a package, she gains the permissions of the user account under which the service is run. Whilst we do not know of any such bugs in PostgreSQL, we enforce the use of a non-administrative service account to minimise the possible damage that a hacker could do should they find and utilise a bug in PostgreSQL to hack the system.
This has long been common practice in the Unix world, and is starting to become standard practice in the Windows world as well as Microsoft and other vendors work to improve the security of their systems.
Note, that with the release of PostgreSQL 8.2, it is possible to run under a administrative account. PostgreSQL 8.2 and above are able to irrevocably give up administrative rights at startup, thus ensuring the rest of the system remains secure in the extremely unlikely event that PostgreSQL becomes compromised.

Update on my end.... changing the port did not work for me either. So I'm guessing it's more likely the issue of the fact that I use an Administrator account as my Windows login. Can anyone who is more familiar with PostgreSQL, and DAZ Studio's use of it, comment on what version is being used, if it is indeed 8.2 or a prior version, and if the administrator account issue is in fact what the problem is? Is there a way to work around it by having PostgreSQL itself run under a non-administrator account, while your Windows login itself is Administrator?

You are using 4.9.2.7. It's glitchy. You must find and download 4.9.1.3 on the torrents (not very easy but google a bit more and you will find). After reinstal on the older version everything will work nearly for sure.

muki fonta had exactly the same problem.

Pluton, thanks for the suggestion However, I believe I have been seeing this issue for more than just the latest release, plus for configuration control purposes, I choose to keep everything up to date with the latest, synced through Install Manager. I only hope the developers at Daz finally figure this issue out and correct so it works for everyone, it sure fails for a lot of people.

"I have been seeing this issue for more than just the latest release" - Yes, but on previous versions all you have done will fix the problem and on 4.9.2.7 it will not. Also on this version videocard rendering and GenX often don't work.

    Newer doesn't always mean better.

I followed the instructions and it did not work for me. And then at the very end, I click the link for zendesk to open a help ticket and I get Access Denied. Could someone at Daz please help?

I have had huge issues getting Studio to work - it never started up properly and souldnt sign in to the SQL database. I eventually set up a new -non-admin Windows user account for my PC and installed Studio and the PostgreSQL via that. This solved my problems but is hugely annoying as the new user account doesn't have all the features and setups like my main user account. Such a crazy thing.

Okay, I've tried everything else. I've uninstalled everything. Set up a non-admin account, and now I get "C:\Program Files (x86) Daz3d\Daz3d\DIM1 is not writable by the current user." I'm on the verge of reinstalling Poser. Help!!!

    Nathan Gopen

I always get the PostGres error, but all my smart content seems to work and otherwise I have no issues. I am not sure to be honest what the heck they use PostgreSQL for since it seems to work fine without it :) But I would stick with Da Studio over Poser if I were you.....

  • Avatar
    Keryn Adcock

Jack Nimble - perhaps you need to adjust the user rights on the new user (non-admin) account you set up ie. access to sue and do stuff with all relevant programs - either that or (just an idea...) uninstall the DIM if it was installed via your admin account, and reinstall it while logged into your new user account on windows. Good luck!

If none of that works you need to enable Run As Administrator... on both your Install Manager and Daz3D Studio applications. That can be gotten to by right clicking on the short-cut or .exe file of either and selecting Properties from the menu. In the Properties Dialog select the Compatibility tab and check the Run this program as administrator (Windows 10). Similarly it should be located in the same place for other operating systems. Do that for both Install Manager and Daz3D and you should be up and going... :-)

Hey Guys, I think I found out how to fix this issue.
Go to C:\Users\ (Your user name) \AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D
After that delete the cms folder
    After then install POsTercml...... again.
    ITS GOING WORK TRUST ME.

And Don't forget to give me a big shoutout when it works.

  • Avatar
    Nathan Gopen

Well Abdullahi, I appreciate you enthusiasm.. but I am not following the instruction about "After then install POsTercml...... again. ". If by that you mean install PostgreSQL CMS again, I tried the steps you mention, but same errors for me.

I just start to have this issue and try to resolve it. If any one come up with something can help I love to know it. I have Daz in two different computers and run just fine in one. I but the other one is more older. This just happen with an Avast update and so far I couldn't solve the problem. I just follow the other suggestions but still no luck
